Russia Unleashes Massive Missile Barrage on Ukraine’s Energy Grid

Just two days before the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion, Russia launched one of the most intense aerial assaults of the winter, firing approximately 50 missiles and 300 drones at targets across Ukraine. The overnight bombardment on Sunday, February 22, crippled energy and rail infrastructure in six regions and left residential neighborhoods in ruins, while a suspected Russian-ordered “terrorist” bombing rocked the western city of Lviv.

A Nationwide Assault on Infrastructure

The barrage targeted the heart of Ukraine’s survival mechanisms during freezing temperatures:

  • The Energy Sector: Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reported massive power outages in eastern and southeastern regions. In Kyiv’s suburb of Sofiivska Borshchagivka, residential buildings were flattened, killing one man and wounding 12 others, including four children.

  • Railway & Logistics: Logistics hubs and railway lines were hit, further complicating the transport of military and civilian supplies.

  • Western Vigilance: The scale of the attack prompted Poland to scramble fighter jets after Russian long-range aviation was detected near its border.

The Lviv “Ambush”: A Calculated Act of Terror

While missiles rained from the sky, a deadly ground-based attack unfolded in Lviv, a city rarely targeted with such frequency.

  • Double Explosion: At approximately 00:30 AM, police responded to a reported break-in at a store on Danylyshyna Street. A primary IED detonated upon their arrival, followed by a second, more powerful blast when backup units arrived.

  • Casualties: The “ambush” killed 23-year-old patrol officer Viktoriia Shpylka and wounded 25 others.

  • The Arrest: Ukrainian law enforcement has detained a woman suspected of carrying out the bombing. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated there is “every reason to believe the crime was committed on the orders of Russia.”

Diplomatic Deadlock: Hungary’s Pipeline “Blackmail”

The military escalation coincides with a deepening rift within the European Union:

  • The Veto: Hungary has vowed to block the EU’s 20th sanctions package against Russia.

  • The Demand: Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is demanding the reopening of the Druzhba oil pipeline, which transports Russian crude through Ukraine to Hungary and Slovakia.

  • The Standoff: Ukraine claims the pipeline was damaged by Russian strikes in January; Hungary and Slovakia have dismissed this as “political blackmail” and have responded by halting diesel and emergency electricity exports to Ukraine.

Moscow Under Pressure

Ukraine’s response was swift, targeting the Russian capital with long-range drones:

  • Airport Shutdowns: All four of Moscow’s international airports—Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky—were forced to suspend operations for several hours on Sunday afternoon.

  • Drone Interceptions: Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin claimed 24 drones were intercepted en route to the capital. Meanwhile, in the Belgorod border region, two civilians were reported killed in separate Ukrainian drone strikes.
