Prime Minister al-Sudani Affirms Strategic Depth of Iran-Iraq Relations

Dec 29, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has issued a definitive statement regarding Iraq’s foreign policy, characterizing the bilateral relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran as a “positive path” built on mutual respect and shared security interests.

Dismissal of Interference Allegations

In a recent address, Prime Minister al-Sudani explicitly dismissed claims of external interference in Iraqi domestic matters. “I have not seen any meddling by Iran in Iraq’s affairs, whatsoever,” the Prime Minister stated, emphasizing that the partnership is rooted in official and political cooperation rather than coercion. He specifically highlighted Iran’s pivotal role in supporting Iraq’s successful campaign against the Daesh terrorist group.

A Multidimensional Partnership

The Prime Minister underscored that the ties between Baghdad and Tehran are multifaceted, spanning several critical sectors:

  • Security & Counter-Terrorism: Recent high-level discussions between Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji and Iranian Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi have reinforced the urgency of implementing bilateral security agreements to ensure regional stability.
  • Energy and Economy: Despite international sanctions, Iran remains Iraq’s primary energy provider, essential for the nation’s industrial and domestic power needs.
  • Cultural Connection: The annual Arbaeen pilgrimage continues to serve as a primary example of the profound “people-to-people” connection between the two nations.

Sovereignty and Independent Foreign Policy

While acknowledging deep ties with neighbors, al-Sudani clarified that Iraq’s external relations are governed by a single, unwavering principle: the interests of the Iraqi people.

“The interests of Iraq and its people remain our top priority,” al-Sudani affirmed, noting that this independent stance applies to Iraq’s engagement with the Arab world, Turkey, and the broader Islamic community. He further reiterated that Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are “absolute and non-negotiable.”

Regional Commitments and Economic Vision

The Prime Minister also touched upon two key pillars of Iraq’s regional identity:

  • The Palestinian Cause: Reaffirming a steadfast commitment supported by all levels of Iraqi society and religious authorities.
  • Strategic Economic Partnerships: Leveraging Iraq’s unique geopolitical position and natural resources to build relationships that foster internal development and long-term stability.

By framing foreign policy through the lens of strategic partnership rather than dependency, the Prime Minister’s office seeks to strengthen Iraq’s role as a sovereign, stabilizing force in the Middle East.
