Apple has unexpectedly removed a popular low-light photography feature from its latest flagship devices, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, confirming that the Night mode option is no longer available when using the camera app’s Portrait mode.
The feature’s absence was first noted by iPhone 17 Pro users on social media last month and has since been corroborated by an updated support guide on Apple’s website, which omits the newest Pro models from the compatibility list for Portrait Night mode.
Apple removed Night mode Portraits from the iPhone 17 Pro, and while a vocal minority of users are frustrated, others never noticed the feature was gone.

This exclusion means that while Night mode remains available for standard Photo, selfie, and time-lapse video modes on the iPhone 17 Pro devices, users who rely on the combination of low-light enhancement and the artsy depth-of-field effect of Portrait mode will find the experience downgraded compared to all preceding Pro models, dating back to the iPhone 12 Pro series.
Despite the confirmed removal, Apple has offered no official explanation for why the feature was dropped from its current flagship phone, nor has it provided any information on whether it plans to restore the capability in a future software update.
