China Urges Global Community to Boost Support for Central African Republic

Oct 29, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

China utilized a United Nations Security Council briefing on Tuesday to advocate for increased international assistance to the Central African Republic (CAR). Speaking at the session, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Sun Lei, acknowledged that while the CAR has made political progress and improved its economic situation, significant security challenges persist.

The call came after Valentine Rugwabiza, Special Representative for MINUSCA (UN Mission in CAR), briefed the Council, noting security improvements in some regions but highlighting continued tensions fueled by the spillover effect of the Sudan conflict. Rugwabiza also drew attention to the current fund shortage and 15% budget cut facing the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

Sun Lei specifically urged the global community to:

  • Continue supporting the CAR in preparing for upcoming elections.
  • Help the country address ongoing security challenges.
  • Enhance the CAR’s sustainable development capabilities.

China expressed hope that increased aid and investment would help the CAR translate its resource advantages into development momentum, allowing it to “embark on a development path suited to its own national conditions.”
