Bride, and Groom among 8 killed in Gas Cylinder Blast at Wedding in Islamabad

Jan 13, 2026 | Latest News

A tragic gas cylinder explosion in Islamabad’s Sector G-7/2 turned a wedding celebration into a disaster, claiming the lives of at least eight people, including the newlywed couple. The blast occurred in the early morning hours, around 7:00 a.m., while the family and their guests were sleeping, just hours after the wedding festivities had concluded. The force of the explosion caused the house to partially collapse and damaged at least four neighboring properties, trapping several victims under the rubble.

The groom, identified as Sharoon (Sheri) Hanif, and the bride, Mehak Sharoon, were among those killed. The groom’s father, Hanif Masih, survived the blast as he was sleeping in an adjacent room; however, he lost his son, daughter-in-law, wife (Joran Bibi), and sister-in-law in the tragedy. Other victims included a cousin and two neighbors, identified as Waseem and Naeem. Rescue teams used thermal imaging and sniffer dogs to pull 19 people from the debris, with approximately 12 survivors transported to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and Capital Hospital, some with severe burn injuries.

Authorities, including Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa, confirmed that the explosion was caused by a gas leak, a common hazard in the winter months when households rely heavily on cylinders due to low natural gas pressure. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani expressed deep grief over the “heart-wrenching” loss and ordered a high-level inquiry to determine the exact cause and improve safety regulations for gas cylinder usage.
