Egypt has officially opened its long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum, a monumental project aimed at revitalizing the country’s tourism industry and strengthening its economy through increased foreign currency inflows.

According to official figures, Egypt welcomed a record 15.7 million tourists in 2024, with the government now targeting over 30 million visitors by 2032. The new museum, one of the largest in the world, is expected to attract between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors daily, said Hassan Allam, CEO of Hassan Allam Holding, the company overseeing the project. “The world has been waiting … everyone’s excited,” he remarked.
Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, called the museum “a gift from Egypt to the world,” expressing pride in sharing the nation’s cultural heritage with global audiences.
However, the opening comes amid renewed scrutiny over artefact security, following recent thefts including a 3,000-year-old gold pharaoh’s bracelet stolen from a Cairo conservation lab.
Despite past disruptions during the Arab Spring and COVID-19 pandemic, officials believe the new museum will mark a turning point for Egypt’s tourism revival and cultural preservation.
