The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today summoned the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to New Delhi, Mr. Riaz Hamidullah, to convey the Government of India’s grave concerns regarding the rapidly deteriorating security environment in Bangladesh and the increasing threats directed at Indian diplomatic interests.

Escalating Security Threats During the meeting, the Ministry expressed serious alarm over reports of extremist elements organizing marches and protests targeting the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. Of particular concern are the activities of groups such as “July Oikya,” whose members have publicly announced plans to create a volatile security situation surrounding the Indian Mission.
The High Commissioner was reminded that under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the host government is under a special duty to take all appropriate steps to protect the premises of the mission against any intrusion or damage and to prevent any disturbance of the peace of the mission.

Suspension of Consular Services In light of the prevailing instability and the immediate risks posed to staff and applicants, the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Dhaka was forced to suspend its operations effective 2:00 PM today. The safety and security of our personnel remains the Government of India’s paramount priority. Operations will remain suspended until a conducive security environment is restored by the local authorities.

Diplomatic Reciprocity The Ministry noted that these developments follow a period of heightened rhetoric. India maintains its stance that the safety of its diplomatic staff is non-negotiable and expects the interim administration in Dhaka to take immediate and effective measures to curb extremist elements and ensure the sanctity of diplomatic enclaves.
The Government of India remains committed to regional stability but emphasizes that a peaceful and secure environment is a prerequisite for the normal conduct of diplomatic relations.
