Pakistan and Afghanistan Agree to Immediate Ceasefire Following Doha Talks

The governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to an immediate and permanent ceasefire following intensive negotiations held in Doha, Qatar. The agreement comes after a week of fierce and deadly clashes along the disputed border and was successfully mediated by the brotherly nations of Qatar and Turkiye.

The immediate ceasefire agreement includes the establishment of mechanisms designed to consolidate lasting peace and stability between the two countries.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar welcomed the successful mediation, calling the agreement a “first step in the right direction.” In a statement, he conveyed profound appreciation for the constructive role played by Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government of Turkiye.

Minister Dar emphasized Pakistan’s forward-looking agenda:

“We look forward to the establishment of a concrete and verifiable monitoring mechanism in the next meeting to be hosted by Turkiye, to address the menace of terrorism emanating from Afghan soil towards Pakistan. It is important to put all efforts in place to prevent any further loss of lives.”

The ceasefire follows high-level talks between both nations’ defence teams. Afghanistan’s negotiating team was led by Defence Minister Mullah Muhammad Yaqoob, while Pakistan’s delegation was led by Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif.

The negotiations were crucial in seeking a way forward after cross-border fighting—the worst violence between the two South Asian neighbours since the Taliban’s takeover in Kabul in 2021—resulted in dozens of casualties. Pakistan has consistently urged Kabul to rein in armed groups operating from safe havens in Afghanistan who have escalated cross-border attacks.

Both countries have also agreed to hold follow-up meetings in the coming days to ensure the sustainability of the ceasefire and verify its implementation reliably.

The successful mediation by Qatar and Turkiye underscores the strong commitment of regional allies to promoting peace and stability across South Asia.
