Pakistan, and Ethiopia Strengthen Defense Ties with High-Level Air Force Talks

Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa, the Commander of the Ethiopian Air Force, visited Air Headquarters in Islamabad on Tuesday, where he met with Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, the Chief of the Air Staff of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). The high-level meeting focused on enhancing professional collaboration and strengthening the defense ties between the two nations, marking a significant step in their military partnership.

Upon his arrival, Lieutenant General Yilma was received with a formal guard of honor by a smartly turned-out PAF contingent, underscoring the importance and cordiality of the visit. The two commanders engaged in detailed discussions on a wide range of professional topics, including operational readiness, command systems, and technological advancements. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a stronger and more comprehensive partnership between their respective air forces.

During the meeting, Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa praised the Pakistan Air Force, commending its “robust operational readiness, evolving multi-domain capabilities, and credible deterrence posture.” He stated that the Ethiopian Air Force seeks to learn from the PAF’s “rich combat experience, integrated command systems, and technological innovations” to bolster its own operational capacity. The visit also highlighted Ethiopia’s keen interest in technology transfer within the aviation sector, particularly for the development and modernization of its air assets. The Ethiopian delegation was provided with comprehensive briefings at the National ISR & Integrated Air Operations Centre and the PAF Cyber Command, offering insights into the PAF’s strategic application of advanced technologies in modern warfare.

In response, Air Chief Marshal Sidhu pledged Pakistan’s readiness to expand defense cooperation through joint training programs and other collaborative initiatives. He assured the Ethiopian delegation of the PAF’s “steadfast support” in its professional pursuits and affirmed that Pakistan deeply values its relationship with Ethiopia. The Air Chief reiterated Pakistan’s firm commitment to providing comprehensive assistance in capacity building, advanced training, and operational domains, reinforcing the foundation for a durable and mutually beneficial partnership.

This meeting is part of a broader strategic effort by Ethiopia to modernize its military capabilities. In the past year, Ethiopia has engaged in defense cooperation talks with other international partners, including India and Nigeria, focusing on areas such as training, financial support, and the joint development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This concerted effort underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to enhancing its defense readiness through a network of international partnerships, with the recent meeting in Islamabad marking a key component of this strategy.
