A New Chapter: Pakistan and Bangladesh Reconnect Through Education and Trade

Pakistan and Bangladesh signaled a significant warming of diplomatic relations as Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Bangladeshi Foreign Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain held a telephonic conversation to cement bilateral cooperation. The talks focused on expanding trade, economic ties, and regional stability. This diplomatic push follows the ouster of the former Awami League government in late 2024, which has opened a window for both nations to move past decades of historical friction.

A cornerstone of this renewed partnership is the “Allama Iqbal Scholarship” program. In its first phase, Pakistan has announced 500 fully funded scholarships for Bangladeshi students to pursue undergraduate and doctoral studies in fields such as medicine, engineering, and social sciences. Entrance exams were recently completed in Dhaka, Chittagong, and Rajshahi. Beyond education, connectivity is also set for a major boost; Biman Bangladesh Airlines is scheduled to resume direct flights between Dhaka and Karachi on January 29, 2026, ending a 14-year hiatus.

Adding a strategic layer to the relationship, defense officials from both sides recently met to discuss “operational synergies,” with reports suggesting Bangladesh is exploring the purchase of JF-17 Thunder fighter jets. While India remains a dominant factor in the region, the swift expansion of Pak-Bangla ties in early 2026 suggests a pragmatic shift toward a more multipolar South Asia, driven by shared economic interests and youth mobility.
