Pakistan and German Development Bank (KfW) Sign €33 Million in Grant Agreements for Hydropower and Solar Initiatives

In a major boost to Pakistan’s renewable energy landscape, the Federal Government and the Government of Punjab have successfully secured two separate grant agreements totaling 33 million euros from the German Government Bank for Development (KfW). These initiatives are designed to harness northern water resources and provincial solar potential to provide sustainable, affordable, and “green” electricity to millions.

Federal Level: €18 Million for Northern Hydropower

The Economic Affairs Division (EAD) signed an 18 million euro grant agreement aimed at transforming the energy profile of Pakistan’s northern regions.

• The Signatories: The agreement was finalized by Secretary Economic Affairs Division Muhammad Humair Karim and KfW Country Director Sebastian Jacobi.

• Project Scope: The grant focuses on generating clean electricity by utilizing the abundant water resources in the northern areas.

• Socio-Economic Impact: Secretary Karim emphasized that the project would address growing energy needs through environmentally friendly solutions, while Mr. Jacobi noted its role in promoting tourism, job creation, and improving livelihoods in the region.

Provincial Level: €15 Million for Solarization of Punjab

Simultaneously, the Punjab Government finalized a 15 million euro agreement with KfW to execute a large-scale solar power transition for public-sector institutions.

• Solar Capacity: The project is estimated to generate 21.119 megawatts of electricity from solar installations.

• Institutional Shift: Under this program, 24 teaching and tertiary care hospitals and six Daanish Schools will be transitioned to solar energy.

• Fiscal Benefits: Energy Department estimates suggest the shift will reduce provincial electricity expenditures by approximately Rs 1.5 billion annually, allowing for more efficient reallocation of public funds.

• Reliability: Punjab’s Provincial Energy Minister stated that providing affordable and reliable electricity is a top priority, with implementation being monitored through rigorous regular reviews.
