Pakistan Grapples with Surge in Militant Attacks, Rising Suicide Bombings

Pakistan is grappling with a significant escalation in terrorist activity as law enforcement personnel face a wave of targeted ambushes and suicide bombings across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab. In a heavy week for the nation’s security apparatus, multiple officers have been martyred, prompting high-tempo retaliatory operations by the military and drawing strong international condemnation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

A Week of Martyrdom: Tactical Ambushes and Suicide Strikes

The most recent violence peaked on Wednesday evening in Bajaur District, where four personnel of the elite Ababeel Squad were martyred during an Iftar-time patrol near Nawai Kallay. The attackers opened fire on the routine patrol, killing officers Yar Zada, Dawood Khan, Imran Khan, and Siraj Khan on the spot.

This followed a series of devastating attacks on Tuesday, February 24:

• The Kohat Ambush: In a brazen assault near Shakardara Road, terrorists ambushed a police vehicle transporting individuals for a court appearance. Six personnel—including DSP Asad Mehmood and an inspector—were martyred. The attackers subsequently torched the vehicle.

• Bhakkar Suicide Bombing: In Punjab’s Bhakkar district, a suicide bomber targeted the inter-provincial Dajal check post. The blast martyred two police officials and injured five others, including two anti-polio health workers.

• Southern Districts: Additional fatalities were reported in Karak, where three Federal Constabulary (FCN) men were martyred while guarding a Rescue 1122 team, and in Lower South Waziristan, where a constable was gunned down in Wana.

The Military Response: “Fitna al-Khawarij” Neutralized

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that security forces have responded with “high-tempo intelligence-based operations.”

• 34 Militants Killed: In the last 48 hours, 26 militants linked to Fitna al-Khawarij (TTP) were killed in KP, while 8 militants from Fitna al-Hindustan were neutralized in the Sambaza area of Zhob, Balochistan.

• Cross-Border Retaliation: These domestic operations follow Saturday’s precision airstrikes against terrorist camps inside Afghanistan. Pakistan maintains it has “conclusive evidence” that recent suicide bombings in Islamabad and Bajaur were orchestrated from Afghan soil.

International and National Reaction

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong statement on Wednesday, reaffirming its “permanent rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism.” The UAE expressed its solidarity with Pakistan, offering condolences to the families of the fallen and the government.

Domestically, President Asif Ali Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi have paid glowing tributes to the “unwavering resolve” of the police. Governor Kundi noted that the security situation in the southern districts has deteriorated significantly, necessitating the current front-line fight being led by the police.

The Data: A Sharp Upward Trend

The current security landscape is underscored by alarming statistics from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) and the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS):

• Fourfold Increase: Terrorist incidents in Pakistan rose from 658 in 2022 to 2,425 in 2025.

• Rising Fatalities: In KP alone, fatalities rose from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 in 2025, indicating a 43% year-on-year increase in violence.
