Pakistan is actively engaged in behind-the-scenes and public diplomatic efforts to revitalize the stalled peace process between the United States and Iran. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam on Wednesday to discuss the evolving regional situation and ongoing peace initiatives.
The meeting occurred against a backdrop of growing uncertainty surrounding the next round of negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Diplomatic sources suggest that the discussions primarily focused on the stalled diplomatic process.
Pakistani officials are utilizing discreet channels to communicate with Iran, encouraging them to re-engage in dialogue. Pakistan has played a crucial role in facilitating contacts since the initial round of talks.
Despite a postponement of the latest round of negotiations, originally scheduled for Wednesday, due to Iran’s reluctance to participate, US President Donald Trump, at Pakistan’s urging, agreed to extend a temporary ceasefire with Iran. This extension aims to provide an opportunity for diplomacy to regain momentum and allow Tehran time to formulate a unified response to Washington’s proposals.
Security measures in Islamabad remain heightened, suggesting preparations are underway for potential high-level engagements. Diplomatic observers believe that a window, albeit narrow, remains open for negotiations to resume in Islamabad.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been actively involved in these efforts. British High Commissioner Jane Marriott commended Pakistan’s role in facilitating discussions between the US and Iran during a meeting with Dar on Wednesday. They discussed the regional situation, with Dar emphasizing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving disputes peacefully. The British envoy expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s facilitative role.

Dar also spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev, exchanging views on regional developments and reaffirming the significance of dialogue and diplomacy in achieving peaceful resolutions. Kulubaev praised Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability.
