Prince Rahim Aga Khan V Reaffirms AKDN’s Commitment to Pakistan During Historic Visit

May 22, 2026 | Latest News

Prince Rahim Aga Khan V, the spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community, arrived in Pakistan on Wednesday for a week-long official visit, reaffirming the Aga Khan Development Network’s (AKDN) enduring commitment to development and humanitarian initiatives across the country. This marks Prince Rahim’s first visit to Pakistan since assuming the Imamat in February 2025, following the passing of his father, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV.

President Asif Ali Zardari and First Lady Bibi Aseefa Bhutto-Zardari warmly received Prince Rahim at Noor Khan Airbase. A tri-services guard of honour was presented at Aiwan-e-Sadr, underscoring the significance of the visit. High-level meetings followed, including discussions with President Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and a delegation-level exchange of views. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir also attended a banquet hosted in Prince Rahim’s honor.

President Zardari lauded the AKDN’s long-standing contributions to Pakistan’s healthcare, education, community development, climate resilience, and heritage conservation, emphasizing the government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the AKDN for the benefit of vulnerable communities. Prince Rahim expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and reiterated the AKDN’s dedication to supporting Pakistan’s development goals.

Historic Significance and Community Anticipation

Prince Rahim’s visit holds profound spiritual, cultural, and national significance, particularly for the Ismaili community in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. The visit is described as a historic and emotional moment, bringing together faith, heritage, leadership, and unity. Preparations have been extensive in the northern regions, with valleys decorated and gateways erected to welcome the spiritual leader. The “deedar,” a moment of spiritual connection, reflection, and renewal, is eagerly awaited by community members.

Critical Analysis

  • Continuity of AKDN’s Role: Prince Rahim’s visit signals a continuation of the Aga Khan family’s deep-rooted engagement with Pakistan. The AKDN has been a pivotal partner in Pakistan’s development landscape for decades, and this visit underscores the ongoing commitment to addressing key challenges such as healthcare, education, and climate change.
  • Strategic Partnerships: The high-level meetings with Pakistani leadership highlight the strategic importance of the relationship between the Ismaili Imamat and the state of Pakistan. These partnerships are crucial for the effective implementation of development projects and initiatives.
  • Spiritual and Cultural Impact: Beyond the economic and developmental aspects, the visit has a significant spiritual and cultural impact on the Ismaili community. The “deedar” provides an opportunity for community members to connect with their spiritual leader, reaffirm their faith, and strengthen community bonds.
  • Geopolitical Considerations: The focus on Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral is noteworthy, given the strategic importance of these regions. The AKDN’s work in these areas contributes to stability and development, addressing the needs of marginalized communities and promoting social inclusion.
  • Symbolic Importance: As a direct descendant of Hazrat Ali (AS), Prince Rahim’s visit carries significant historical and spiritual weight, particularly for communities in the mountainous regions of northern Pakistan.

  • Shafic Sachedina, Head of Department of Jamati Institutions
