Trump Orders Blockade of Sanctioned Oil Tankers to Venezuela

Dec 25, 2025 | Global Affairs

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he is ordering a blockade of all “sanctioned oil tankers” entering Venezuela, sharply escalating U.S. pressure on President Nicolás Maduro and signaling a more aggressive stance toward the South American nation’s economy.

The move follows last week’s seizure of an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast by U.S. forces. This uncommon action came amid a noticeable buildup of American military assets in the region. In a social media post Tuesday night, Trump accused the Venezuelan government of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and other criminal activity, claims long denied by Caracas.

Trump said the blockade would remain in effect until Venezuela complies with U.S. demands, including the return of oil, land, and other assets he claims were “stolen” from the United States. He did not specify what assets he was referring to or explain the legal basis for the claim.

The announcement raises questions about the scope and legality of the blockade, which could significantly disrupt Venezuela’s already fragile economy and heighten tensions in the region. A full naval blockade is generally considered an act of war under international law. However, it remains unclear how broadly the administration intends to enforce the order or which vessels would be targeted.

Pentagon officials declined to comment on operational details, referring all questions to the White House. Venezuelan officials had not immediately responded, though the Maduro government has previously condemned U.S. sanctions and military actions as violations of its sovereignty.

Analysts warn the move could further destabilize Venezuela while increasing the risk of confrontation between U.S. forces and foreign vessels operating in the area.
