White House Condemns Senate Democrats for Shutting Down Government

Oct 2, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Vice President JD Vance and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt today sharply condemned Congressional Democrats for triggering a government shutdown, asserting the shutdown is solely the result of the Democratic Party’s refusal to pass a clean continuing resolution unless Republicans agree to provide billions of dollars in health care funding for illegal aliens.

“The reason your government is shut down at this very minute is because, despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of Congressional Republicans and even a few moderate Democrats supported opening the government, the Chuck Schumer, AOC wing of the Democratic Party shut down the government,” stated Vice President Vance.

Shutdown Driven by Absurd Demands

Vice President Vance emphasized that the Democrats’ sole condition for reopening the government was the reinstatement of funding for health care benefits for illegal immigrants—a policy previously reversed by the Trump Administration.

“To the American people who are watching, what they have done instead is to shut down the government because we won’t give billions of dollars to health care funding for illegal aliens,” Vice President Vance noted, calling the demand a “ridiculous proposition.”

He further detailed the impact of this funding: “If you’re an American citizen, you’ve been to a hospital in the last few years, you probably noticed that wait times are especially large and very often somebody who’s there in the emergency room waiting is an illegal alien… The Democrats in their legislative texts want to turn it back on.”

Democrats Vote Against Clean Funding Bill

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted the legislative hypocrisy of the Democrats.

“Democrats in Congress have officially shut down the United States government. House Republicans passed a nonpartisan clean piece of legislation to extend current government funding until November 21st,” Leavitt explained. “But nearly every single Democrat senator voted against this bill.”

She pointed out the stark contradiction, noting this was “the exact same bill that Democrats approved six short months ago in March. Just adjusted for inflation. This is the same kind of clean funding bill that Democrats passed 13 separate times when they held the majority during Joe Biden’s administration.”

Political Motivation and Operational Response

Vice President Vance suggested that the shutdown is rooted in internal Democratic politics, stating, “The reason why the American people’s government is shut down is because Chuck Schumer is listening to the far left radicals in his own party because he’s terrified of a primary challenge.”

Regarding the government’s operational status, Vice President Vance committed the Administration to minimizing the impact on the public. “We’re going to do everything that we can over the coming weeks… to ensure that people get the essential services that they need, despite the fact that Chuck Schumer has shut down the federal government,” Vance said, while cautioning that “extraordinary steps,” including potential layoffs, might be necessary if the shutdown is prolonged.

Demand to Reopen the Government

Press Secretary Leavitt called on Democrats to reverse course immediately.

“Democrats need to stop sabotaging our country and holding the American people hostage… The American people want the government reopened. And this is proven in a New York Times poll showing that two in three Americans say the government should not be shut down by the Democrats, even if their absurd demands are not met,” she concluded.

Vice President Vance invited Democratic leadership to prioritize the public interest: “I’d invite Chuck Schumer to join the moderate Democrats and 52 Senate Republicans, do the right thing, open up the people’s government, and then let’s fix health care policy for the American people.”
