The White House today confirmed that on Tuesday, October 30, US President Donald Trump will conduct a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Gyeongju, South Korea.

The talks are timely to the two biggest economies in the world as the tension is mounting on vital trade matters. The most important one will be the recent export restrictions of rare earth materials in China, which are crucial elements in the contemporary technology. President Trump has responded to these controls by threatening publicly to levy an extra 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods beginning in November unless Beijing lifts the restrictions.
President Trump said that he wanted the meeting to be fruitful: “We can sort out a lot of our doubts and questions and our enormous assets together. I believe that something will happen. That will be a big one, we get along very well.
In line with this optimism, the Minister of Commerce in China Wang Wentao said on Friday that previous talks show that it is quite possible to find a solution to the concerns of each other and that it is possible to promote the healthy, stable and sustainable development of the China-US economic and trade relations.
The last time the two leaders met in person was in 2019, but since then, they have been communicating three times this year, the latest being in September on the operations of Tik Tok in the US. President Trump has repeatedly stressed that the best way to solve the ongoing problems, such as trade disputes, tariffs, and fentanyl trafficking, is through direct communication with President Xi.
The encounter with President Xi is a wider diplomatic visit of President Trump in Asia. The itinerary of the President also includes:
- Participation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Malaysia on Sunday.
- An encounter with the South Korean president Lee Jae Myung at the APEC summit.
- A two-way meeting with the new Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi.
- The President will also attend a working dinner of APEC leaders at the summit that will be held between October 31 and November 1.
