In a symbolic transition of power at the stroke of midnight, Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the Mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim to lead the nation’s most populous metropolis.
The Ceremony
Shunning traditional pomp for his official entry into office, the 34-year-old Democrat took his oath at an abandoned subway stop beneath City Hall. The venue was selected to underscore Mamdani’s central campaign pillars: public transit and the dignity of the working class.
The oath was administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James. Mayor Mamdani placed his hands on two copies of the Holy Quran—one a family heirloom belonging to his grandfather, and the other a historic copy from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
In his inaugural remarks, Mayor Mamdani stated:
“Happy New Year to New Yorkers, both inside this tunnel and above. This station is a testament to the importance of public transit to the vitality, the health, and the legacy of our city. This is truly an honor and a privilege of a lifetime.”
A Mandate for Affordability
Mayor Mamdani enters City Hall with a historic mandate, having inspired a record-breaking turnout of over 2 million voters. Securing 50% of the vote, he finished nearly 10 points ahead of independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
His administration begins with a bold “Affordability First” agenda, which includes:
- Housing: A promised freeze on rents to combat the city’s housing crisis.
- Transit: The implementation of free bus services across the five boroughs.
- Social Infrastructure: Universal free childcare for all New Yorkers.
Governance and Diplomacy
While Mamdani’s “upstart” progressive background has signaled a potential ideological clash with U.S. President Donald Trump, the Mayor has moved quickly to stabilize the city’s economic outlook. His transition team, comprised of veterans from previous mayoral administrations and the Biden-Harris government, has opened a productive dialogue with the business community to ensure New York remains a global financial hub.

A large-scale ceremonial inauguration will take place later today outside City Hall. The event will feature keynote addresses from Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
