BEIJING – Chinese President Xi Jinping met with visiting Russian parliament speaker Vyacheslav Volodin today to affirm their nations’ commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership and jointly safeguarding their security and development interests. The meeting underscored a shared vision to build a more “equitable” international order amidst rising global tensions.
President Xi was quoted by state-run Xinhua news agency as saying that China and Russia should continue their traditional friendship and deepen strategic mutual trust. This comes as the United States President Donald Trump considers imposing “massive” sanctions on Russia in response to its actions in Ukraine. Both leaders also discussed their intention to “unite” countries in the Global South to form a powerful, cohesive bloc.
The visit by Mr. Volodin precedes a key trip by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Beijing this weekend, where he is scheduled to attend a security forum and a military parade. This parade, marking the formal surrender of Japan and the end of World War Two, is being used by Beijing to highlight the pivotal roles China and the former Soviet Union played in the conflict. President Xi characterized the China-Russia relationship as a “source of stability for world peace.”
This diplomatic engagement occurs as the United States threatens to impose tariffs on both China and India, with Beijing facing potential tariffs on rare earth magnets and New Delhi bracing for additional tariffs as a result of its oil purchases from Russia.
