Doha Summit: PM Sharif Proposes UN Membership Suspension, and Task Force Curb Israeli Aggression

DOHA, QATAR – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, leading a high-level delegation, participated in the emergency Arab-Islamic Summit convened in Doha to address the recent Israeli airstrike on Qatar. In his address, the Prime Minister called for urgent, unified action to hold Israel accountable, proposing the formation of a task force and the suspension of Israel’s membership in the United Nations.

The Prime Minister strongly condemned the Israeli attack on Doha, stating it was carried out by an “aggressor who violates international law seriously” and was a deliberate attempt to undermine peace efforts in the Middle East. He termed the act a “flagrant violation of the sovereignty of Qatar” and expressed Pakistan’s full solidarity with the Qatari people.

“The Israeli attack on Qatar is not apart from the other attacks; it is hegemonic ambition on the part of Israel to control the whole region,” Prime Minister Sharif stated. He expressed deep appreciation for Qatar’s diplomatic efforts, recognizing the role of mediators as sacred and crucial for peace, especially while the people of Gaza endure a “massacre” that the entire world is witnessing.

Key Proposals, and Demands

Prime Minister Sharif outlined several urgent steps to address the crisis:

• Formation of a Task Force: He proposed the establishment of an Arab-Islamic task force to monitor Israeli designs and adopt effective deterrent and offensive measures to counter its expansion plans.
• Suspension of UN Membership: The Prime Minister reiterated the call for the suspension of Israel’s membership in the United Nations, stating that such a step would send a “clear message of seriousness by the Ummah.”
• Immediate Ceasefire: He urged the UN Security Council to immediately demand an unconditional and permanent ceasefire under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, along with the release of hostages and an exchange of Palestinian prisoners.
• Humanitarian Access: The Prime Minister called for guaranteed, sustained, and secure humanitarian access to all civilians in need, as well as the protection of aid workers, medical teams, and UN personnel.
• Two-State Solution: He emphasized the urgent need for a just, comprehensive, and lasting two-state solution, which includes an independent State of Palestine with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

Bilateral Meetings on the Sidelines

On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Sharif held a significant bilateral meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The two leaders exchanged views on the situation following Israel’s aggression on Doha. The Prime Minister underscored that the convening of the summit had sent a powerful message that the Muslim world speaks with one voice against Israel’s “unlawful and reckless aggression.”

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed his appreciation for the Prime Minister’s leadership and for Pakistan’s active diplomatic efforts, particularly at the UN and the OIC, in expressing solidarity with Qatar. He also highlighted his anticipation of PM Sharif’s upcoming visit to Riyadh for a comprehensive exchange of views on a range of bilateral and global issues. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Other leaders at the summit, including Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, also delivered strong statements condemning Israel’s actions and highlighting the threat to regional peace.

Prime Minister Sharif was accompanied by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant to PM Tariq Fatemi. His participation underscores Pakistan’s resolute commitment to a just resolution for the Palestinian people and to upholding the sovereignty and security of its Muslim brethren.
