Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari clarified the government’s stance on solar energy and the broader power sector on Sunday, March 22, 2026. While reaffirming support for solar power, the Minister emphasized the need for a balanced transition to prevent “unfair cost-shifting” onto non-solar consumers. He warned that unmanaged rooftop solar expansion risks destabilizing the national grid, particularly during the sharp evening demand surges that occur once solar generation ceases.
The Minister also addressed the severe energy disruptions caused by the ongoing U.S.-Israel war on Iran. He revealed that LNG imports have been significantly impacted following a force majeure declaration by QatarEnergy. To manage this shortfall, the government has implemented targeted demand management measures. However, Leghari assured that critical sectors, particularly the fertilizer industry, will be shielded to ensure national food security. He further dismissed calls to entirely replace gas-fired plants with coal, noting that gas remains essential for managing rapid fluctuations in electricity usage.

Despite the regional turmoil, Leghari highlighted a resilient 12.1% year-on-year growth in electricity demand this January. He credited the government’s surplus electricity package for this surge, noting that industries have saved approximately Rs 12 billion under the discounted rates. Moving forward, the Ministry remains focused on structural reforms, including the privatization of three major DISCOs to unlock the next IMF loan tranche and the continued liberalization of the energy market.
