GILGIT-BALTISTAN, Pakistan – August 9, 2025 – The government of Gilgit-Baltistan today announced its swift response to the partial blockage of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) in the Hunza Valley. A spokesperson for the GB government, Faizullah Faraq, confirmed that a portion of the vital highway was washed away by rising water levels in the Khunjerab River.
The blockage, caused by a combination of river erosion and increased water flow, has prompted an immediate and decisive response from the regional administration. According to Mr. Faraq, the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan has issued a direct order for the urgent restoration of the affected section of the highway to ensure minimal disruption for commuters and commercial traffic.
In light of the increased water flow in the region’s rivers and lakes, the government has also imposed a ban on all boat operations, and Section 144 has been enforced in affected areas to ensure public safety. Authorities are taking strict action against any individuals or operators who violate this ban.
The government of Gilgit-Baltistan remains committed to the safety of its citizens and tourists, particularly during this period of extreme weather and potential flooding. Restoration work is underway, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further damage and to re-establish full connectivity as quickly as possible.
