Texts No Longer Private: Google Sends Your Private Chats To Your Employer

Google has introduced a new Android RCS Archival feature for work-managed devices that allows employers to intercept and archive employees’ RCS and SMS text messages, effectively ending the expectation of privacy in workplace texting. The update, available on Google Pixel and other compatible Android Enterprise devices, allows authorized third-party archival apps to integrate directly with Google Messages.

This system is designed primarily to help organizations, particularly those in regulated industries like finance, meet stringent compliance and record-keeping requirements, including legal discovery. Previously, end-to-end encryption in RCS made such archiving difficult; however, since messages are decrypted once they arrive on the device, the archival process happens directly on the work phone, capturing a readable copy of all sent, received, edited, and even deleted messages.

Google confirmed that this feature only affects work-managed devices and does not impact personal phones.

Furthermore, employees will receive a clear, visible notification on their device when the archival feature is active, ensuring transparency.

While the feature provides compliance benefits and allows companies to use modern RCS messaging features, it is likely to exacerbate employee concerns regarding privacy and may push more workers toward secure, over-the-top platforms like WhatsApp and Signal for private communication, as those apps maintain control over their own encryption and are not affected by this update.

The move shows that, regardless of encryption in transit, data on a company-controlled device is ultimately accessible to the employer.
