An Israeli air strike has killed at least 10 people and wounded dozens more near a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza’s Maghazi refugee camp.

The strike occurred on Monday after local residents clashed with members of an Israeli-backed militia that reportedly tried to abduct people from the school, according to medics and eyewitnesses.
Health officials at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah said Israeli shelling and subsequent drone strikes killed at least 10 people, with several others critically injured. Witnesses reported that two missiles were fired from drones during the clashes.
“The residents tried to defend their homes, but the occupation forces targeted them directly,” one resident, Ahmed al-Maghazi, told Reuters.
The leader of the Israeli-backed militia later claimed in a video that its members had killed five Hamas fighters. Neither Hamas nor independent sources have verified this claim.
Maghazi refugee camp was previously designated by the Israeli military as a so-called “safe zone.” However, it has been repeatedly hit by Israeli strikes throughout the two-year war, including a deadly attack in December 2023 that killed over 100 people, mostly women and children.
The latest violence comes despite a fragile ceasefire that took effect in October. Israeli attacks have continued across Gaza, including on civilian areas and humanitarian targets.
Separately on Monday, an Israeli strike hit a World Health Organization vehicle in southern Gaza, killing one staff member and injuring several others, according to local sources and an Al Jazeera correspondent.
The incidents have further heightened concerns over civilian safety and the fragile security situation in Gaza.
