More than 50 people were injured in explosions at a mosque inside a Jakarta high school complex during Friday prayers, Indonesian authorities confirmed. The blast occurred around 12:15 p.m. local time in Kelapa Gading, a district of the capital, leaving several students with severe burns.
Police identified the suspect as a 17-year-old student, who was also injured in the incident. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the teenager assembled and detonated the homemade explosive. A bomb squad was deployed to secure the area and check for additional devices.
Witnesses reported panic and chaos as white smoke filled the mosque and windows shattered from the blast. Some students claimed the suspect had been bullied and often drew violent images.
Authorities also discovered two toy guns at the scene, initially mistaken for real firearms, one inscribed with the name “Brenton Tarrant,” referencing the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacker. Officials urged the public not to speculate on motives while the investigation continues.
