This functionality is designed to significantly boost productivity by allowing office colleagues to collaborate in a shared space on tasks like coding, creating keynote presentations, or brainstorming complex projects faster. Beyond professional use, the feature can be used for leisure, enabling groups of friends or family to plan vacations or parties with quick, AI-enhanced decision-making.

Users can invite between one and twenty people to a conversation by simply sharing a link, and anyone in the group can further share that link to bring in additional members. When someone is added to an existing chat, a copy is created to keep the original, private conversation separate. The group chats are powered by the recently updated ChatGPT 5.1 model, offering improved reasoning and conversational quality.
For safety, OpenAI has implemented restrictions for teenage users (under 18) by automatically reducing exposure to sensitive content, and parental controls allow guardians to disable the group chat functionality entirely. The new group chats are housed in a clearly labeled section of the app’s sidebar for easy access.
