SCO Countries Convene in Beijing to Advance “Global Governance Initiative” for a Multipolar World

Oct 19, 2025 | Global Affairs, Latest News

The 2025 Global Governance Roundtable for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Countries successfully concluded in Beijing, with participants underscoring the collective commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable international system. The high-level dialogue focused on injecting “SCO wisdom” into addressing global governance deficits and accelerating sustainable development worldwide.

Over 150 representatives, including officials from the SCO Secretariat, UN agencies in China, think tanks, media professionals, and international organizations from China and SCO member states, participated in the event.

Commitment to Inclusive Global Governance

The core focus of the Roundtable was the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), an SCO-backed framework that champions a more democratic, efficient, and people-centered international system.

Mr. Chang Bo, Director of the China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, emphasized the vital role of the SCO in promoting global peace and cooperation. He highlighted that the GGI, formally introduced at the “SCO+” meeting in Tianjin, aims to ensure that global governance serves the interests of all nations, particularly those in the developing world.

SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev and other officials reiterated the bloc’s strong commitment to multilateralism and the foundational principles of international law. The Initiative prioritizes equitable development, peaceful coexistence, and reinforced international collaboration, aligning closely with the UN’s “Compact for the Future” and working to rebuild trust between nations in a transforming multipolar order.

Pakistan Voices Full Support for GGI

The dialogue saw firm support from SCO member states. Mr. Sohail Mahmood, Director General of the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad, confirmed Pakistan’s full backing of the initiative from its inception.

“Pakistan agreed with this compelling logic and has fully supported this Initiative from the outset,” Mahmood stated. He noted that the GGI’s five core concepts are deeply rooted in time-honored norms of inter-state relations and reflect the central tenets of modern China’s diplomatic thought and practice.

Collaborative Way Forward

In closing, the conference emphasized the critical role of the SCO in shaping the future of global governance and advocating for a comprehensive, collaborative approach to the world’s most pressing challenges.

The Roundtable was a joint effort organized by the China International Communications Group (CICG), the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the China Institute of International Studies. It was hosted by the CICG Center for Europe and Asia (China Pictorial) and the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies.
