United States President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese today signed a landmark agreement on rare earth and critical minerals at the White House, solidifying a strategic partnership aimed at diversifying global supply chains and reducing dependence on dominant overseas producers.
The agreement, negotiated over the past several months, establishes a robust framework for cooperation on key resources essential for defense, clean energy, and advanced technology sectors.

The bilateral pact outlines immediate and substantial financial commitments to accelerate the development of critical minerals projects across both nations:
- Joint Investment: The United States and Australia will each commit $1 billion over the next six months (a combined $2 billion) into joint mining and processing projects.
- Project Pipeline: Prime Minister Albanese described the immediate opportunity as an “$8.5bn pipeline that we have ready to go,” emphasizing the scale and maturity of the projects targeted for investment.
- Market Stabilization: The agreement institutes a minimum price floor for critical minerals, a move long advocated by Western miners to provide necessary stability and security for high-risk, long-term investments in the sector.
President Trump hailed the deal as a necessary step for economic and national security. “This agreement ensures our supply chains are secure and resilient. We are strengthening the essential infrastructure of our future, together,” said President Trump.
The leaders also engaged in extensive discussions on matters of trade, military equipment, and the trilateral AUKUS security partnership.
Specifically, the discussion focused on the existing $239.4 billion agreement under which Australia is set to acquire US nuclear-powered submarines. Following a review of the framework, President Trump confirmed the path forward is clear and resolute.
“There shouldn’t be any more clarifications, because we’re just, we’re just going now full steam ahead, building,” President Trump stated, signaling complete political backing for the historic defense collaboration.
This agreement underscores the enduring strength of the US-Australia alliance and its shared commitment to economic security, defense collaboration, and a rules-based international trading system.
