The medical community in Lahore was shaken by the death of a 22-year-old student, Fareeha Afrahim, at Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU). A final-year MBBS candidate originally from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Fareeha passed away Tuesday night after falling from the rooftop of her campus hostel. Despite emergency neurosurgery at the affiliated Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, she succumbed to severe head and neck injuries.
The incident has sparked a national conversation on student welfare, as the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) took formal notice on Thursday. The council has directed FJMU to submit a detailed report within seven days and advised all medical colleges to hire qualified psychologists to combat “exam-related burnout.” While university officials initially suggested an accidental fall due to “dizziness,” police and classmates have pointed to severe exam stress and depression, noting that she had just completed one paper and was preparing for another.

In a show of respect, FJMU has suspended all educational activities and examinations until February 24. This tragedy marks the third such incident in Lahore since December 2025, prompting urgent calls from the Higher Education Commission for mandatory mental health counseling across all universities.
