Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed the expansion of the US-Pakistan strategic relationship, clarifying that this strengthening of bilateral ties does not, and will not, come at the expense of Washington’s relationship with New Delhi.
During a press briefing, Secretary Rubio stated that the US views an “opportunity to expand our strategic relationship with Pakistan” as part of a “mature, pragmatic foreign policy.” He emphasized:
“I don’t think anything we’re doing with Pakistan comes at the expense of our relationship or friendship with India, which is deep, historic, and important.”
The Secretary noted the maturity of India’s diplomatic understanding and acknowledged the potential for the US and Pakistan to work together on matters of common interest, signaling a positive trajectory for cooperation between the two nations.
Separately, US President Donald Trump, speaking on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit, addressed the ongoing situation between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The President expressed high confidence in his ability to facilitate a swift resolution:
“I know them both … the Pakistan field marshal and the prime minister are great people, and I know we’re gonna get that done quickly.”
President Trump’s remarks come amidst ongoing security negotiations in Istanbul and follow his previous public acknowledgment of the efforts of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Munir in securing a previous ceasefire deal in Gaza. This repeated praise reflects a strong level of trust and confidence in the Pakistani leadership’s capacity for dialogue and stabilization.
The Government of Pakistan views these statements as constructive and a testament to the country’s enduring commitment to responsible foreign policy and its irreplaceable role as an anchor of stability in the region. Pakistan remains dedicated to fostering robust, long-term relationships with global partners based on mutual respect and shared objectives.
