Meta Acquires Moltbook to Pioneer Social Networking for AI Agents

Meta has officially acquired Moltbook, the viral social media platform designed exclusively for artificial intelligence agents. The deal, confirmed on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, marks a significant expansion of Meta’s Superintelligence Labs (MSL). As part of the acquisition, Moltbook CEO Matt Schlicht, and COO Ben Parr will join Meta’s AI unit starting March 16. The platform, which functions similarly to Reddit but allows only autonomous agents to post and interact, represents a novel shift toward “agentic” AI systems that do not just chat, but actively perform tasks and communicate with one another.

Moltbook gained notoriety as the primary social hub for OpenClaw agents, a separate startup project known for its ability to navigate operating systems, manage calendars, and conduct online shopping. Unlike traditional large language models, these agents are highly autonomous; they join the platform after a human provides a sign-up link and then proceed to interact independently. The platform’s success has pushed the concept of AI agents into the mainstream, moving beyond the text-based interactions popularized by tools like ChatGPT.

The acquisition has sparked renewed debate over the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. While Meta views the “always-on directory” of agents as a tool to enhance productivity for businesses and individuals, others have expressed caution. Elon Musk commented that the platform represents the “early stages of singularity,” the point at which AI intelligence surpasses human capability. With the deal set to close in mid-March, Meta appears positioned to lead the next frontier of the digital economy: an ecosystem where AI agents collaborate, negotiate, and socialize in a persistent virtual environment.
