On January 15, 2026, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Sun Haiyan, Vice Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, to discuss the rapid advancement of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). During the meeting in Islamabad, the Prime Minister emphasized the critical need for the timely implementation of “Phase 2” projects, which focus on industrialization, high-tech development, and agricultural modernization. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s “iron-clad” partnership with China and reiterated his invitation for President Xi Jinping to visit Pakistan later this year.

The year 2026 holds immense diplomatic weight as both nations celebrate the 75th anniversary of their formal relations. To mark this milestone, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently unveiled a commemorative logo in Beijing, kicking off a year of high-level exchanges. PM Shehbaz noted that the visit of the Chinese delegation follows successful trips by the Pakistani interior minister to Shanghai and the deputy prime minister to Beijing, with the Speaker of the National Assembly also scheduled to visit China shortly.
