A joint education initiative involving the United Kingdom, Punjab, and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has improved foundational literacy and numeracy for more than 200,000 children. The programme worked across public schools, returned thousands of out-of-school children to classrooms, and combined teacher training with remedial learning support.
What the UK–Pakistan education programme delivered
The initiative reached more than 500 public schools. It helped 35,000 children re-enter education, provided remedial support to 48,000 students, upgraded facilities in 400 schools, and trained more than 5,500 educators and 250 master trainers.
Its approach focused on practical classroom improvements rather than access alone. Teachers received support in evidence-based learning methods, while school upgrades were designed to create a more consistent environment for early-grade teaching.
Measured gains in literacy and mathematics
Official evaluations reported substantial progress. Urdu reading proficiency increased from 15% to 78%, English reading levels rose from 15% to 45%, and subtraction competency improved from 37% to 67%.
These results show why early-grade education needs regular assessment and targeted intervention. Identifying learning gaps quickly allows teachers to provide support before children fall further behind, while trained master trainers can help spread effective practices across more schools.
British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, PECTAA chief Muhammad Musa Ali Bokhari, and K-P Special Secretary for Education Masood Ahmed welcomed the partnership and said the next challenge is sustaining the gains.
