Hundreds of Tunisian citizens and activists gathered in the capital city of Tunis late Wednesday to condemn the Israeli interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian aid mission attempting to break the long-standing blockade of the Gaza Strip.
The nocturnal demonstration saw protesters waving Palestinian and Tunisian flags while chanting slogans in support of the flotilla’s mission. Many watched a live video feed of the flotilla projected onto a nearby wall, underscoring the immediate nature of their solidarity.
The Global Sumud Flotilla Context
The intercepted flotilla consisted of approximately 40 civilian boats carrying around 500 participants from nearly 46 nationalities, including parliamentarians, lawyers, and human rights activists. Their stated purpose was purely humanitarian: to deliver essential aid and supplies to the war-ravaged enclave and challenge the restrictive maritime blockade imposed on Gaza.
The Israeli intervention occurred when the boats were approximately 70 nautical miles off the coast, within a zone policed by Israeli forces. Organizers reported that communications were scrambled during the boarding and redirection of the vessels to an Israeli port, effectively halting the high-profile protest against the blockade.

Protesters Denounce Blockade and Interception
During the protest, participants voiced strong opposition to the military action taken against the peaceful, multinational aid effort.
Tunisian protester Sami Ettounsi articulated the public sentiment, stating:
“Regarding stopping the ships and trying to break this humanitarian effort, this peaceful, major humanitarian action carried out by people from almost 46 nationalities around the world, everyone is trying to break this cruel and unjust blockade. Of course this is oppression, an objection, standing against a human will and human instinct that wants to reach the Gaza Strip, protect its people, and try to break this siege.”
Protesters called for international action to ensure the safety of the activists and the delivery of the aid.

Demand for Unimpeded Aid Access
The demonstrators issued a clear demand for an end to intervention against humanitarian missions. Sami Ettounsi further expressed:
“We demand that this Zionist entity stop the extermination and massacres, stop standing in the way of the free people, and allow the ships to reach the Strip so that maybe it will lessen some of its crimes and the blood it has shed since 1948.”
The Tunis demonstration highlights the widespread regional tension and international opposition surrounding the ongoing naval blockade and the actions taken against efforts to deliver aid to Gaza.
