The United States has approved a substantial $686 million foreign military sale package to provide advanced technology, support, and refurbishment for Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jet fleet, according to a notification sent by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) to Congress.

The rationale for the sale is clearly stated as supporting US national security objectives by enhancing Pakistan’s ability to participate in counterterrorism efforts and ensuring “seamless integration and interoperability” with US and partner forces during joint operations and exercises.
The crucial components of the deal include 92 Link-16 data link systems, which are secure, real-time communication networks resistant to electronic jamming, and avionics updates intended to extend the aircraft’s service life through 2040 while addressing “critical flight safety concerns.”
The DSCA stressed that the package, which also includes cryptographic equipment, training, and logistical support, will “not alter the basic military balance in the region”, a statement aimed at assuaging long-standing concerns from India. The overall package is split between $37 million in major defense equipment and $649 million in non-MDE support, with Lockheed Martin serving as the principal contractor.
