US and Russia Hold Peace Talks in Abu Dhabi Amid Intensifying Strikes on Kyiv

Senior officials from the United States and Russia held high-level peace talks in Abu Dhabi as part of renewed diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine, even as Russia launched a massive missile and drone assault on Kyiv overnight, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread infrastructure damage.

According to US officials, US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll led discussions with the Russian delegation, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to achieving a lasting peace. The talks are being closely coordinated with the White House and are part of an intensified diplomatic push under the Trump administration. Driscoll is also expected to engage with Ukrainian officials during his visit.

Meanwhile, Kyiv endured one of its deadliest bombardments in recent weeks, with at least six people killed and vital power and heating systems disrupted. Civilians sought shelter in metro stations as missiles and drones struck residential areas.

The proposed US peace plan reportedly includes significant provisions, such as territorial concessions by Ukraine, military limitations, and a permanent bar on NATO membership — terms that have raised serious concerns among Ukrainian leadership and European allies.

President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that while some elements of the plan are constructive, key sensitive issues will be personally discussed with President Trump. French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned against any settlement resembling capitulation and stressed that only Ukraine has the right to determine territorial compromises.

Tensions also escalated along NATO’s eastern flank as Romanian fighter jets intercepted drones that breached its airspace near the Ukrainian border, underlining the broader security implications of the conflict.

The situation remains fluid as diplomatic efforts continue alongside ongoing hostilities.
