Renowned educationist, poet, and human rights activist Dr Arfa Sayeda Zehra passed away in Lahore on Monday at the age of 83. Her niece, Ameena Kamal, confirmed that the funeral will take place tomorrow at the family graveyard in Cavalry Ground, Lahore.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over her death, calling it an “irreparable loss for Pakistan’s academic and literary circles.” He praised her lifelong dedication to education, research, and the promotion of Urdu, saying her contributions “will always be remembered.”

Dr Zehra was a celebrated scholar and educationist with over five decades of teaching experience. She has served as chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women and taught at several prestigious institutions, including Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), Government College University (GCU), LUMS, and Forman Christian College.

Born in Lahore, she earned degrees from LCWU, GCU, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she completed her PhD in History. She resigned from teaching last year due to health issues.
