TEHRAN, Iran – August 9, 2025 – The Islamic Republic of Iran has formally rejected a planned transit corridor outlined in a recent peace accord between Armenia and Azerbaijan, brokered by the United States. While welcoming the peace agreement between its neighbors, Iran has expressed deep concern over the geopolitical implications of the proposed route, which it views as a threat to regional stability and its national interests.
According to a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Akbar Velayati, the plan is considered “political treachery” and a conduit for foreign influence in the region. Velayati warned that the corridor, named the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP), would enable NATO to strategically position itself between Iran and Russia, an outcome that Iran will not permit.
The proposed route would connect Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan enclave through Armenia, with exclusive development rights granted to the United States. Iranian officials have stated that while they support regional connectivity, any projects must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations. The Iranian Foreign Ministry, in a separate statement, reiterated its support for peace and dialogue but cautioned against any “foreign intervention near its borders.”
Iran asserts its right to safeguard its borders and maintain regional security. The nation remains committed to fostering peace and stability in the Caucasus through diplomatic means that do not compromise the sovereignty or security of the states in the region.
