Escalation in Lebanon: Israeli Strikes Kill 12 as Ceasefire Fails

Feb 23, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Lebanon reported that a series of Israeli airstrikes targeting the eastern and southern regions killed 12 people, including three children. The Israeli military stated the raids targeted “command centers” belonging to Hezbollah and its Palestinian ally, Hamas. The most significant strike occurred in the Bekaa Valley, where a senior Hezbollah commander, Hussein Mohammad Yaghi, was killed alongside seven other operatives during a strategic meeting. These attacks mark a significant breach of the November 2024 ceasefire that was intended to halt over a year of regional hostilities.

In southern Lebanon, an Israeli drone strike hit a residential building in the Ain al-Helweh refugee camp near Sidon, killing two people. While Israel claimed it was targeting a Hamas military installation, Hamas leaders rejected the allegation, asserting the building belonged to a joint security force responsible for camp stability. In the eastern city of Baalbek, hundreds gathered for a mass funeral, waving Hezbollah flags and vowing continued resistance against what they termed a “new massacre.”

The violence comes at a precarious time for the Lebanese government, which recently launched the second phase of a plan to disarm Hezbollah. Pro-Hezbollah lawmakers have called on Beirut to suspend these disarmament meetings until the Israeli attacks cease. With tensions simultaneously rising between the United States and Iran over nuclear deadlines, the region remains on the brink of a broader conflict.
