LAHORE – A major crackdown against illegal constructions, dubbed the “plaza mafia,” has commenced in Lahore. This grand operation was initiated under the direct instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, targeting unauthorized structures across the city.
According to sources, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Lahore ordered the operation following a hearing. During this session, plaza owners were unable to provide construction maps or any valid legal evidence for their structures.
The DC Lahore subsequently issued demolition orders for the illegal plazas. This directive paved the way for immediate enforcement action by city authorities. One such operation focused on an illegally constructed plaza located on GT Road.
Tehsil Shalimar’s Assistant Commissioner, Saqib Tarar, led this operation. He was accompanied by personnel from the Punjab Emergency Services Regulatory Authority (PERA) and a strong police contingent.
Assistant Commissioner Saqib Tarar confirmed the operation targeted illegal constructions on GT Road. This extensive drive aims to reclaim public land and ensure compliance with building regulations. Near the Ring Road’s Quaid-e-Azam Interchange, an unlawfully built plaza was demolished.
During the demolition operation, the land mafia and their armed associates resisted. Assistant Commissioner Saqib Tarar stated they attempted to obstruct the authorities.
Sources revealed the land mafia tried to resist using firearms. However, the accompanying police force effectively managed the situation.
Assistant Commissioner Saqib Tarar confirmed that the land grabbers involved were successfully arrested by the relevant police units. Further arrests are reportedly underway as the investigation progresses.
Fortunately, initial reports indicate no casualties or serious injuries among the government officials or police personnel involved in the operation. This incident underscores the significant challenges faced by authorities in curbing illegal land grabbing and construction across the city. The operation continues as authorities aim to dismantle unauthorized structures and restore legal order.
