Seoul — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the test-firing of two newly developed anti-aircraft missile systems on August 23, marking a significant advancement in the country’s air defence capabilities amid heightened regional tensions.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the tests validated the missiles’ “superior combat capability” and rapid response against diverse aerial threats—specifically drones and cruise missiles—using unique and special technology. The state media emphasized the weapons’ effectiveness and Kim’s direction to defense scientists to undertake additional key tasks ahead of a major political gathering expected next year.
While KCNA refrained from naming the missile models or revealing the launch location, outside analysts note that North Korea continues developing its Pongae-5 (KN-06) system—a long-range surface-to-air missile reportedly capable of striking targets up to 150 km away. This system bears design similarities to the Russian S-300 and has been deployed in multiple variants over the past decade.
