Senior Opposition Leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Arrested Amid Mass Protest Against Election Commission

NEW DELHI – August 11, 2025 – Senior opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with dozens of other Members of Parliament from the INDIA bloc, were detained by Delhi Police today. The arrests occurred during a large-scale protest march from Parliament to the headquarters of the Election Commission of India (ECI). The demonstration was organized to submit a formal complaint against the ECI, alleging “collusion” with the ruling BJP and demanding an investigation into electoral irregularities.

Police officials stated that while a small group of 30 MPs had been granted permission to meet with Election Commission representatives, the protest was attended by over 200 individuals. The situation escalated when protestors attempted to break through police barricades, leading to the detentions to prevent a “breakdown of law and order.” The leaders were transported to a nearby police station.

The protest, which the opposition has dubbed a campaign against “vote chori” (vote theft), focused on allegations of widespread irregularities in electoral rolls, particularly concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in certain states. The opposition coalition argues that the integrity of the democratic process is at risk and is demanding greater transparency from the ECI.

As he was being taken into custody, Rahul Gandhi addressed reporters, stating, “This fight is not political. This fight is to save the Constitution. It is a fight for ‘one man, one vote.'” The ruling party has countered these claims, accusing the opposition of attempting to “create anarchy” and undermine constitutional institutions. The arrests underscore the heightened political tensions and deep-seated disagreements over the electoral process in the country.
