President Donald Trump has announced that he will visit Beijing in April after a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking a new phase of cooperation between the US and China. Trump also invited President Xi for a state visit to the United States next year, signaling a cooling of tensions following years of trade disputes and geopolitical strain.
During their call, which lasted approximately an hour, the two leaders discussed major global issues, including trade, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the fentanyl crisis, and the situation in Taiwan. Trump described the relationship between the two countries as “extremely strong,” while China’s state news agency emphasized the need to maintain positive momentum based on equality and mutual benefit.

The renewed dialogue follows a meeting between the leaders in Busan, South Korea, a month earlier, where they agreed to ease tariffs and step back from escalating trade threats. The US reduced a fentanyl-related tariff, while China postponed its rare earth export controls.
However, sensitive issues remain. Xi underscored that Taiwan’s return to China is key to Beijing’s long-term vision, while tensions between China and Japan continue to rise. Despite this, both sides expressed satisfaction with recent progress, hinting at a potentially more stable future in US–China relations.
