BERLIN – August 10, 2025 – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz today announced a halt to all military equipment exports that could be used in Gaza, effective until further notice. The decision comes as a direct response to a recent plan approved by the Israeli Cabinet to launch what Chancellor Merz described as “even harsher military action” in Gaza City.
In a statement, the Chancellor emphasized that while Germany continues to support Israel’s right to self-defense, the government is deeply concerned about the escalating military action and its potential impact on the civilian population. “We find it difficult to see how the approved military actions will achieve their stated goals,” Merz said.
The announcement represents a significant policy shift from one of Israel’s strongest international allies and is expected to increase international pressure on the Israeli government. The Chancellor also called for comprehensive and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid deliveries to address the dire situation in Gaza. The specific types of military equipment affected by the export halt were not immediately specified.
