The announcement comes amid heightened tensions following Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s refusal to withdraw remarks suggesting that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a Japanese military response. In retaliation, Beijing has restricted “dual-use” exports to Japan and issued travel warnings to its citizens. Japan’s move to fortify Yonaguni is seen as a direct effort to create a credible deterrent against any potential move by China to annex Taiwan by force.

While the central government maintains the deployment is essential for national security, the island’s 1,500 residents remain deeply divided.
