The exchange highlighted the enduring “special relationship” between the United Kingdom and the United States, even amidst global tensions.
The King playfully alluded to President Trump’s past remarks about European allies, quipping, “Dare I say that, if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French,” referencing the historical rivalry between Britain and France in North America.
Charles also joked about the White House renovations, referencing the British army’s burning of the building in 1814 and quipped that the dinner was “a very considerable improvement on the Boston Tea Party.”
President Trump responded in kind, congratulating King Charles on his speech to Congress, noting, “He got the Democrats to stand — I’ve never been able to do that.”
