Landslide Strike Nepal, Dozens Killed

Oct 5, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs and disaster relief agencies confirm that devastating landslides, triggered by prolonged heavy monsoon rains, have claimed the lives of dozens of people across several mountainous districts. The natural disaster strikes during a sensitive period of national political transition, placing immediate and acute pressure on the new administration and local governance structures.

The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue in remote and affected areas. The landslides have obliterated homes, submerged entire villages, and severed critical transportation links, isolating numerous communities. Immediate infrastructure damage includes the collapse of multiple bridges and the blockage of major national highways, severely complicating efforts by security forces and relief teams to reach those trapped or injured.

Political Challenge and Government Response

The timing of this catastrophe coincides with a critical phase of political transition, demanding the immediate mobilization of national resources and attention away from key governance and stabilization efforts. Officials state that the disaster management task is currently the highest national priority.

The government has activated emergency protocols, immediately deploying units of the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, and specialized disaster response teams (NDRF) to the worst-hit districts. These teams are focused on primary search-and-rescue, providing emergency medical aid, and establishing temporary shelter for the displaced. Due to inaccessible terrain, air assets are being utilized to airlift supplies and personnel where possible.

Call for International Assistance

The new administration has issued an urgent appeal to international partners and humanitarian organizations for assistance. The required aid includes emergency shelter materials, medical supplies, food rations, and technical expertise in complex disaster recovery, particularly given the large number of displaced families facing harsh weather conditions.

A multi-agency task force is being established to coordinate the response, manage the influx of aid, and ensure transparency in relief distribution. The government extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirms its commitment to comprehensive relief and recovery efforts.
