A high-profile debate at the Oxford Union, scheduled to feature senior figures from Pakistan and India, was cancelled following the last-minute withdrawal of the Indian delegation, triggering strong reactions and widespread speculation regarding the reasons behind the decision.
The debate was to be held on the motion:
“This House Believes India’s Policy Towards Pakistan is a Populist Strategy Sold as Security Policy” and had reportedly been confirmed weeks in advance for 12:30am PKT.
Pakistan’s delegation, comprising former Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Lt Gen (R) Zubair Mahmood Hayat, former Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, and former diplomat Dr Mohammad Faisal, had already arrived in London to participate in the event.
According to a statement issued by the Pakistan High Commission in London, India’s originally announced speakers — General M.M. Naravane, Dr Subramanian Swamy, and Sachin Pilot — withdrew at the eleventh hour, leaving the debate without an opposing panel. The High Commission further alleged that subsequent proposals for replacement speakers were not of comparable standing, which it said compromised the balance and credibility of the discussion.

Describing the withdrawal as a “collective retreat,” the High Commission stated that the development reflected India’s reluctance to engage on a neutral academic platform and characterised it as an unchallenged opportunity for Pakistan to present its perspective.

Sources familiar with the matter described the late change as unusual, noting that Oxford Union debates are typically finalised well in advance. The incident has also prompted public debate and social media speculation over whether external pressure may have influenced the Indian delegation’s decision to withdraw.
The Oxford Union has not yet issued an official statement regarding the cancellation.
