The Punjab government is weighing drastic measures to combat an intensifying energy crisis, including a proposal to extend school holidays until April 15, 2026. Sources indicate that the provincial Energy Department submitted these recommendations on Tuesday, March 24, as the impact of the Middle East conflict continues to choke global fuel supplies. If approved, educational institutions, originally set to reopen on March 31, may transition to a hybrid learning model to reduce student commutes and building energy consumption.
To manage thinning petroleum stocks, authorities are also considering a digital or coupon-based fuel rationing system. This would likely limit fuel availability for private vehicles to specific days, mirroring emergency policies recently discussed at the federal level. Other proposed “austerity” steps include early market closures, a ban on non-essential public events, and strict work-from-home directives for private organizations. To mitigate the impact on commuters, the government plans to expand metro and bus services, while streetlights may be switched to “alternate mode” after 10:00 PM to conserve the provincial power grid.
