South Africa Terms U.S. G20 Exclusion “Regrettable,” Reaffirms Commitment to Multilateral Cooperation

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has described as “regrettable” the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that South Africa would not receive an invitation to the 2026 G20 Summit, set to be hosted in Miami, Florida.

In a social media statement, President Trump cited dissatisfaction over the recent handover of the G20 presidency following the Johannesburg summit, alleging that South Africa failed to properly transfer leadership to a U.S. representative. South African authorities clarified that, in the absence of the U.S. delegation at the summit, the presidency instruments were formally handed over to a U.S. Embassy official in accordance with established procedures.

South Africa’s Presidency rejected claims made by the U.S. leader regarding alleged violence and land seizures targeting the white minority, describing them as misinformation lacking credible evidence. President Ramaphosa expressed concern that punitive measures were being based on distortions and reiterated South Africa’s openness to constructive engagement.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya acknowledged that relations between the two countries remain strained but emphasised South Africa’s determination to continue working with other G20 members to advance the outcomes achieved at the Johannesburg summit. These include commitments to multilateral cooperation, climate action, and tackling global economic inequality.

South African officials have called upon fellow G20 members to uphold the integrity and inclusiveness of the forum and reaffirm the rights of all member states to participate equally.

Despite the diplomatic tensions, South Africa remains steadfast in its role as a responsible global partner and will continue to champion collaboration and dialogue on key international challenges.
